INDIE STORM INTERVIEW:
ICE ON FIRE

 

1. Come è nata la vostra band?

La band nasce nel 2012 da un’idea del batterista Gian Franco Tosi, alla ricerca di componenti per formare una cover band power metal. Muoviamo i primi passi proponendo brani di storiche band della scena power per poi iniziare a dedicarci, dopo un paio d’anni, alla stesura di brani inediti.

2. Quali sono le vostre principali influenze musicali?

Il power metal è sicuramente un’influenza importante ma ogni membro della band cerca sempre di arricchire il nostro sound portando influenze musicali diverse. C’è chi è cresciuto a pane e classic metal (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest..), chi invece è più vicino a sonorità prog (Dream Theater). Quando poi lavoriamo alla nostra musica tutte queste diverse influenze escono in modo molto naturale e contribuiscono a formare il nostro sound.

3. Qual è il significato dietro il nome della vostra band?

Pensiamo che l’ossimoro Ice on Fire (ghiaccio in fiamme) descriva perfettamente il nostro suono e più in generale quello della musica metal: duro e granitico come il ghiaccio ma allo stesso tempo in grado di scaldare il cuore!

4. Come nasce una vostra canzone?

Solitamente tutto parte da una piccola idea musicale: un riff di chitarra, una melodia, una linea vocale.. se percepiamo che da quel piccolo spunto può nascere qualcosa di più grande allora cominciamo a lavorare tutti assieme in sala prove alle diverse sezioni che comporranno il brano fino ad arrivare all’arrangiamento definitivo.

5. Qual è il processo di scrittura dei testi?

Analizzando i testi dei nostri brani si possono individuare due “linguaggi” letterari diversi. Alcuni testi trattano infatti di esperienze personali vissute o di avvenimenti di attualità che in qualche modo hanno influenzato chi li ha scritti; altri invece hanno uno stile decisamente più “fantasy” che ben si addice al nostro genere musicale.

6. Qual è stata la canzone più difficile da scrivere e perché?

Sul nostro nuovo album “Nine Shades Of Evil” il brano “To Live Is To Die” ha sicuramente richiesto uno sforzo in più: il pezzo si apre con una sezione strumentale in cui si attinge a sonorità quasi prog, con arrangiamenti particolari e cambi di tempo; nel ritornello escono invece le nostre influenze power, fatte di riff granitici e cavalcate di doppia cassa! Una bella sfida dal punto di vista compositivo ma allo stesso tempo una grande soddisfazione!!!

7. Cosa possiamo aspettarci dal vostro prossimo album?

Al momento non ti sappiamo dire con precisione cosa aspettarsi dal nostro prossimo album, avendo appena pubblicato “Nine Shades Of Evil” (uscito il 17 aprile e disponibile sulle principali piattaforme digitali oppure in versione CD), preferiamo raccontarti di quest’ultimo, che racchiude tutti gli elementi che contraddistinguono il nostro sound. I nostri precedenti album erano totalmente autoprodotti mentre questa volta, per ottenere un prodotto di qualità superiore, abbiamo deciso di affidarci a uno studio professionale (Media Factory di Fabrizio Romani) per quanto riguarda il mix del disco. Così facendo abbiamo ottenuto un prodotto che permette di cogliere al meglio tutte le diverse sfumature musicali che volevamo dare ai brani.
Il prossimo lavoro? Chissà, non sappiamo cosa ci aspetta, sicuramente ci lavoreremo con il nostro solito entusiasmo.

8. Quali sono i vostri piani per il prossimo anno?

Il primo appuntamento in calendario è quello del 31 maggio presso il Gasoline Road Bar di Castegnato (Brescia). Durante la serata presenteremo ufficialmente il nuovo album con un release party! Condivideremo il palco con due altre grandi band (Eregion e Inheritance) e inoltre saranno presenti diversi espositori.. una vera e propria festa insomma!

Speriamo poi di intraprendere un’attività live più prolifica possibile per supportare come si deve “Nine Shades Of Evil”, un album che ha segnato un nuovo capitolo nella storia degli Ice on Fire!

"Ecco una band che riesce a catturare l'essenza dell'heavy metal classico con uno stile che richiama inevitabilmente gli Iron Maiden. Questa band riesce a distinguersi grazie a una scrittura originale e a una produzione sonora di altissimo livello.

 

La prima cosa che colpisce è la qualità della registrazione: il suono è pieno, ricco e dettagliato, con ogni strumento che trova il suo giusto spazio nel mix. La chitarra è potente e incisiva, il basso è solido e pulsante, mentre la batteria è precisa e coinvolgente.

 

Ma ciò che realmente distingue questa band è la loro capacità di creare canzoni che sono al tempo stesso epiche e orecchiabili. La melodia è catchy, mentre la struttura della canzone tiene l'ascoltatore costantemente impegnato.

 

Il cantante è una vera rivelazione, con una voce potente e espressiva che riesce a passare dalla dolcezza a toni più decisi con estrema facilità. La sua performance è sempre convincente e coinvolgente, e riesce a trasmettere la passione e l'energia della band.

 

In sintesi, questa band è un vero e proprio gioiello dell'heavy metal. Con la loro miscela di epicità e orecchiabilità, unita a una produzione sonora di altissimo livello, sono una band che non può essere ignorata. 

 

Una band che non si limita a rendere omaggio al passato, ma che lo trasforma in qualcosa di vivo, pulsante, pronto a conquistare una nuova generazione di ascoltatori. La loro musica è un ponte tra epoche. Se c’è ancora spazio per il vero heavy metal, loro sono pronti a riempirlo, perché volano dove osano le aquile.

ICE ON FIRE

 

Nati a Brescia nel 2012 da un’idea di Gianfranco Tosi (Batteria, ex Black Diamond), come cover band Power/Heavy, proponendo brani di Helloween, Stratovarius, Judas priest etc.

Decidono poi strada facendo, di iniziare a scrivere brani originali, proponendo dal vivo un mix di cover ed inediti.Questa scelta portò la band alla decisione di registrare un album in completa autonomia, sì i soldi contano! 

Registrarono così il loro primo album "TIME TO RISE" nella propria sala prove con mezzi diciamo…di fortuna (come si evince purtroppo all’ascolto) ma sono comunque soddisfatti a livello compositivo e sì, anche a livello di produzione, in quanto nessuno dei membri è fonico, master engineering o altro.

Dopo qualche Live, purtroppo pochi (lo spazio agli inediti underground è sempre risicato come sappiamo tutti), iniziano la stesura di nuovi brani e le registrazioni del secondo album “HANDS OF DESTINY”.

Dopo aver completato la registrazione di tutti gli strumenti però, la cantante di allora e il bassista decidono di lasciare la band.Questo provocò il fermo dell’attività live e ovviamente delle registrazioni.La band inizia quindi la ricerca di 2 sostituti.

Dopo l’estenuante ricerca di una voce femminile mai andata a buon fine, la band decide di ampliare le candidature anche a voci maschili, ed ecco che entra nella band “Sandro Vitti” , voce dei “Maiden Italy – Iron Maiden tribute”, e in passato della band inediti “Scream”. 

Sandro inizia quindi a registrare le parti vocali di “HANDS OF DESTINY”, trovandosi però a dover adattare le parti scritte per una voce femminile alla sua vocalità, ovviamente questa cosa allungò i tempi di registrazione.

Nel frattempo Sandro chiede al bassista (Rospy G.) dei Maiden Italy se fosse interessato a suonare inediti, questo accettò di buon grado e così si completò la formazione.

Viene portata a termine la produzione di “HANDS OF DESTINY”, sempre registrato e mixato nella propria sala prove con mezzi limitati e senza l’apporto di un tecnico/fonico che sia.

Produzione con un piccolo miglioramento rispetto al primo lavoro, ma purtroppo il sound non fa rendere i brani come volevamo, ma il nostro impegno è stato massimo, e appunto, c’è stato un miglioramento.

Pubblicato il disco con buone recensioni da webzine minori, la band si esibisce in qualche live e inizia la stesura dei brani che faranno parte della “nuova fatica in studio”.

E qui, per varie ed eventuali, il bassista lascia la band seguito poco dopo anche il chitarrista (Marco), si inizia la ricerca di sostituti e si trova subito un nuovo bassista, il buon Nadir Mutti che entra nella band con grande entusiasmo!

Al contrario invece la ricerca di un chitarrista diventa un calvario e dopo vari provini, la band, scoraggiata dal non trovare una persona adatta, decide di portare avanti il tutto con una sola chitarra e si portano a termine le nuove composizioni.

trova grande affiatamento e decide quindi di fare il salto, il nuovo album verrà registrato in un vero e proprio studio gestito professionalmente (Media Factory di Fabrizio Romani) e di affidare la parte grafica a “REN’S ART” per la copertina ed un nuovo logo.

Portate a termine le registrazioni e il mix finale dell’album, a settembre 2024 viene pubblicato il singolo “NIGHTMARE”, che a differenza dei precedenti lavori (sarà per l’affiatamento della band, per il gran lavoro in studio, per la maturità compositiva raggiunta o tutti e tre i fattori), supera le 16000 visualizzazioni in pochi mesi, regalando alla band grande soddisfazione!

Il 17 Aprile finalmente esce “NINE SHADES OF EVIL”, l’ultima fatica della band, sia sulle maggiori piattaforme digitali che in copia fisica.

Per il 31 maggio la band ha organizzato un release party al “Gasoline Road Bar” di Brescia, al quale parteciperanno come ospiti la power metal band piemontese “EREGION” e i bergamaschi “INHERITANCE”, nonché alcuni espositori, tra i quali Bianca, in arte Ren’s art che esporrà i propri lavori.

Questa è la storia degli “ICE ON FIRE”! 

Nome ideato dal buon Gianfranco dopo aver sentito un brano degli Axxis con questo titolo, durante l’ascolto ha pensato che fosse l’ossimoro perfetto per rappresentare la propria musica!

 

1. How was your band formed?  

   The band was founded in 2012 from an idea by drummer Gian Franco Tosi, who was looking for members to form a power metal cover band. The first steps were taken by performing songs from legendary power metal bands, and after a couple of years, they began writing original tracks.  

 

2. What are your main musical influences?  

   Power metal is a fundamental influence, but each member of the band enriches the sound with different musical backgrounds.  

   Some grew up listening to classic metal, like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest.  

   Others lean towards prog influences, such as Dream Theater.  

   When working on new music, all these influences emerge naturally and help shape the band's sound.  

 

3. What is the meaning behind your band's name?  

   The oxymoron Ice on Fire perfectly describes the band's sound and, more broadly, what metal music represents.  

   Solid and strong like ice.  

   Intense and capable of igniting emotions like fire.  

 

4. How does a song come to life for you?  

   Everything starts with a small musical idea, a guitar riff, a melody, or a vocal line.  

   If the initial spark feels promising, the band begins working together in the rehearsal room.  

   Gradually, they develop the different sections of the song until reaching the final arrangement.  

 

5. What is the songwriting process for your lyrics?  

   The band's lyrics typically follow two distinct literary styles.  

   Some songs explore personal experiences or current events that impacted the writer.  

   Others embrace a more fantasy-oriented style, which fits well with the band's musical genre.  

 

6. Which song was the hardest to write and why?  

   On the latest album Nine Shades Of Evil, the track To Live Is To Die was the most challenging to compose.  

   The opening instrumental section leans into prog influences, featuring intricate arrangements and tempo shifts.  

   The chorus reflects the band's power metal roots, with solid riffs and thunderous double bass drumming.  

   It was a creative challenge, but also an incredibly rewarding experience.  

 

7. What can we expect from your next album?  

   It is too early to say what to expect from the next album.  

   Since Nine Shades Of Evil was just released, available since April 17 on major digital platforms and in CD format, the band prefers to talk about this project.  

   Unlike previous albums, which were entirely self-produced, this time the band worked with Media Factory and Fabrizio Romani for a professional mix.  

   The result is a high-quality product that enhances the diverse musical nuances the band wanted to express.  

   The future? Whatever comes next, the band will approach it with its usual passion and enthusiasm.  

 

8. What are your plans for the next year?  

   The first scheduled event is on May 31 at the Gasoline Road Bar in Castegnato, Brescia.  

   During the evening, the band will officially present the new album with a release party, sharing the stage with Eregion and Inheritance.  

   Several exhibitors will be present, making the event a real celebration.  

   The band hopes to embark on an intense live schedule to properly support Nine Shades Of Evil, which marks a new chapter in the history of Ice on Fire.

Here is a band that manages to capture the essence of classic heavy metal with a style that inevitably evokes Iron Maiden. This band stands out thanks to original songwriting and top-notch sound production.

ICE ON FIRE

Born in Brescia in 2012 from an idea by Gianfranco Tosi (Drums, former Black Diamond), as a Power/Heavy cover band, performing songs by Helloween, Stratovarius, Judas Priest, etc.

They then decided to start writing original songs, performing a mix of covers and originals live. This choice led the band to the decision to record an album completely independently—yes, money matters! They recorded their first album "TIME TO RISE" in their rehearsal space with makeshift equipment (as can unfortunately be heard), but they are still satisfied with the compositional level and yes, also with the production level, as none of the members are sound engineers or anything like that.

After a few live performances, unfortunately few (as we all know, space for underground originals is always limited), they began drafting new songs and recording their second album “HANDS OF DESTINY.” However, after completing the recording of all the instruments, the then-singer and the bassist decided to leave the band. This caused a halt in live activity and, of course, in the recordings. The band then began the search for two replacements.

After an exhausting search for a female vocalist that never succeeded, the band decided to broaden the search to include male voices, and thus “Sandro Vitti” joined the band, the voice of “Maiden Italy – Iron Maiden tribute,” and previously of the original band “Scream.” Sandro then began recording the vocal parts of “HANDS OF DESTINY,” but found himself having to adapt the parts written for a female voice to his vocal range, which obviously extended the recording time.

In the meantime, Sandro asked the bassist (Rospy G.) from Maiden Italy if he was interested in playing originals, and he gladly accepted, thus completing the line-up.

They completed the production of “HANDS OF DESTINY,” still recorded and mixed in their rehearsal space with limited means and without the help of a sound technician. The production saw a slight improvement compared to the first work, but unfortunately, the sound did not render the songs as they wanted; however, their commitment was maximum, and indeed, there was an improvement.

The album was released with good reviews from smaller webzines, the band performed at a few live shows, and began drafting songs that would be part of their “new studio effort.” Here, for various reasons, the bassist left the band, followed shortly after by the guitarist (Marco). They began the search for replacements and quickly found a new bassist, the good Nadir Mutti, who joined the band with great enthusiasm!

On the other hand, the search for a guitarist became a struggle, and after various auditions, the band, discouraged by not finding a suitable person, decided to move forward with just one guitar and completed the new compositions.

They find great chemistry and decide to take the leap. The new album will be recorded in a professional studio (Media Factory by Fabrizio Romani), and the graphic design will be entrusted to “REN’S ART” for the cover and a new logo.

After completing the recordings and final mix of the album, in September 2024, the single “NIGHTMARE” is released. Unlike their previous works (whether due to the band's chemistry, the great work done in the studio, the compositional maturity reached, or all three factors), it surpasses 16,000 views in just a few months, bringing the band great satisfaction!

On April 17, “NINE SHADES OF EVIL” is finally released, the band’s latest effort, available both on major digital platforms and in physical copies.

For May 31, the band has organized a release party at the “Gasoline Road Bar” in Brescia. The event will feature the power metal band from Piedmont, “EREGION,” and the band from Bergamo, “INHERITANCE,” as guests, along with some exhibitors, including Bianca, aka Ren's Art, who will showcase her works.

This is the story of “ICE ON FIRE”!

The name was conceived by the good Gianfranco after hearing a track by Axxis with this title. While listening, he thought it was the perfect oxymoron to represent their music!
